A MESSAGE FROM GRANDMASTER SANCHEZ
Life is what you make it…..Many people like to play the “blame game”……As martial artists, you must take responsibility for what you do in life, as well as in the dojo…..The dojo is only a small microcosm of how we conduct ourselves outside……Just recently we had a student quit the dojo because he was offended by what I said to him. My words were HARSH perhaps, but I suspect his ego was crushed when I told him in so many words not to attempt a technique because he wasn’t ready for it yet …..As a teacher I RESERVE THE RIGHT to criticize when I feel it is needed. Needless to say the criticism wouldn’t have been issued, had he not attempted to go beyond what I had already given him to learn . The exercise he was attempting to do would have been introduced to him at a later time after he had mastered the techniques he was currently learning ….His last words before quitting were that he would miss San-Jitsu because it is a “ great art” & that he would continue to “honor me as his martial arts Father” after leaving….A little late for that because of his actions, but none the less, I hold no grudge against him because he was a good student. It just seems like a simple way out to me to just quit & then years later when you are old & gray, recalling what “might” have been, saying to yourself“ if only I would have continued with my training”. Ego is the worst thing that a martial artist can have, particularly if you are a student….. " YOU are the Master of your own fate”. If you feel something is of value to you, don’t quit because your “feathers get ruffled”….. It is not the most intelligent or the most athletic who attain their goals in life, it is those that persevere……Remember that!
To the many fine San-Jitsu students & instructors out there, particularly abroad in far away places that continue to train I thank you for your loyalty & dedication…..San-Jitsu will serve you well when you most need it. Much love to you & your loved ones from mine.
Lastly, for those of you who have internet capabilities, I would like to share with you a very funny, b ut true adage about life itself…..ENJOY!
